It is bordered by Libya to the north, Sudan to the east, the Central African Republic to the south, Cameroon and Nigeria to the southwest and Niger to the west. It is the fifth largest country in Africa in terms of area. Chad is divided into multiple regions: a desert zone in the north, an arid Sahelian belt in the centre and a more fertile Sudanese savanna zone in the south. Lake Chad, after which the country is named, is the largest wetland in Chad and the second-largest in Africa. N'Djamena, the capital, is the largest city. Chad is home to over 200 different ethnic and linguistic groups. Arabic and French are the official languages. Islam and Christianity are the most widely practiced religions. Beginning in the 7th millennium BC, human populations moved into the Chadian basin in great numbers. By the end of the 1st millennium BC, a series of states and empires rose and fell in Chad's Sahelian strip, each focused on controlling the trans-Saharan trade routes that passed through the region. France conquered the territory by 1920 and incorporated it as part of French Equatorial Africa. In 1960, Chad obtained independence under the leadership of François Tombalbaye. Resentment towards his policies in the Muslim north culminated in the eruption of a long-lasting civil war in 1965. In 1979, the rebels conquered the capital and put an end to the south's hegemony. However, the rebel commanders fought amongst themselves until Hissène Habré defeated his rivals. He was overthrown in 1990 by his general Idriss Déby. Since 2003, the Darfur crisis in Sudan has spilt over the border and destabilised the nation, with hundreds of thousands of Sudanese refugees living in and around camps in eastern Chad. While many political parties are active, power lies firmly in the hands of President Déby and his political party, the Patriotic Salvation Movement. Chad remains plagued by political violence and recurrent attempted coups d'état. Chad is one of the poorest and most corrupt countries in the world; most inhabitants live in poverty as subsistence herders and farmers. Since 2003, crude oil has become the country's primary source of export earnings, superseding the traditional cotton industry. In the 7th millennium BC, ecological conditions in the northern half of Chadian territory favored human settlement, and the region experienced a strong population increase. Some of the most important African archaeological sites are found in Chad, mainly in the Borkou-Ennedi-Tibesti Region; some date to earlier than 2000 BC. For more than 2,000 years, the Chadian Basin has been inhabited by agricultural and sedentary people. The region became a crossroads of civilisations. The earliest of these were the legendary Sao, known from artifacts and oral histories. The Sao fell to the Kanem Empire, the first and longest-lasting of the empires that developed in Chad's Sahelian strip by the end of the 1st millennium AD. The power of Kanem and its successors was based on control of the trans-Saharan trade routes that passed through the region. These states, at least tacitly Muslim, never extended their control to the southern grasslands except to raid for slaves. In Kanem, about a third of the population were slaves. French colonial expansion led to the creation of the Territoire Militaire des Pays et Protectorats du Tchad in 1900. By 1920, France had secured full control of the colony and incorporated it as part of French Equatorial Africa. French rule in Chad was characterised by an absence of policies to unify the territory and sluggish modernisation compared to other French colonies. The French primarily viewed the colony as an unimportant source of untrained labour and raw cotton; France introduced large-scale cotton production in 1929. The colonial administration in Chad was critically understaffed and had to rely on the dregs of the French civil service. Only the Sara of the south was governed effectively; French presence in the Islamic north and east was nominal. The educational system suffered from this neglect. After World War II, France granted Chad the status of overseas territory and its inhabitants the right to elect representatives to the French National Assembly and a Chadian assembly. The largest political party was the Chadian Progressive Party (PPT), based in the southern half of the colony. Chad was granted independence on 11 August 1960 with the PPT's leader, a Sara people François Tombalbaye, as its first president. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chad

Wide shot of municipal worker around bodies in truck 8. Mid shot of workers and truck 9. Bodies in truck 10. Truck driving away bodies 11. Various of traffic in street STORYLINE: The Chadian prime minister on Thursday declared a curfew in the capital N'Djamena and other regions of the country with immediate effect, to help restore order after days of fighting that have left hundreds dead and caused thousands to flee the country. Prime Minister Nouradin Koumakoye announced the dusk-to-dawn curfew in N'Djamena and six southern and eastern regions a day after the president insisted his government had regained total control of the country following weekend clashes with rebels. "We decided a curfew in some regions, from 18:30 until 06:00 (1730 GMT to 0500 GMT)," Koumakoye told reporters, saying it was necessary to "restore calm." Chad's neighbour Sudan has repeatedly denied charges that it supported rebels who entered the capital over the weekend, only to be pushed back by government forces. Over 100 civilians died in the fighting. Chad's President Idriss Deby, in a radio interview with Europe-1 broadcast on Thursday, urged a planned European peacekeeping force to quickly deploy to Chad to ease pressure on his own forces. The EU force's mission is to protect refugees from Sudan's conflict-wracked Darfur region and civilians displaced by fighting in Chad. France, the prime mover behind the peacekeeping plan, has had to work hard to persuade its European allies the force would not be entangled in any effort to prop up Deby. Chad's government and an aide to the French president have accused Khartoum of backing Chadian rebels to prevent deployment of the peacekeepers - Sudan has long resisted such a force. The European force is to number 3,700, with France the biggest troop contributor. Deployment, delayed earlier by logistical problems, was put off again because of the rebel attack on Chad's capital. Deby had made similar comments a day earlier, after France said it would enter the fight against the rebels on his behalf if necessary. The rebels accuse Deby of corruption and embezzling millions of dollars in oil revenue. While many Chadians may share that assessment, the uprising appears to be a power struggle within the elite that has long controlled Chad; rebellion leaders include Mahamat Nouri, a former defence minister, and Timan Erdimi, a nephew of Deby who used to be his chief of staff. Deby said the Chadian army was chasing the rebels, who were fleeing east. However, he did suggest that his government had been weakened. French Defence Minister Herve Morin - who flew to Chad on Wednesday in a show of support for the former colony's government - suggested the rebels had not been routed. Damage by rebels to Parliament building STORYLINE: President Idriss Deby''s supporters took to the streets of Chad''s capital N''Djamena on Monday, ahead of the May 3 presidential elections, as the threat of a violent overthrow of the government remained. In the latest developments in an ongoing crisis, Deby on Monday heeded international calls to protect refugees from Sudan''s volatile Darfur region and backed off a threat to expel them. But he reiterated accusations that Khartoum was responsible for last week''s deadly rebel attack on the capital, a UN official said. Deby had announced on Friday - the day after a rebel attack on N''Djamena - that he was severing relations with Sudan. He threatened to expel 200-thousand Sudanese refugees if the international community did not do more to stop what he claimed were Sudanese backed-rebels from destabilizing his government before the May 3 presidential election. Sudan has denied any involvement with the Chadian rebels. Chadian forces repelled the attack on Thursday, but the rebel United Front for Change was regrouping in the countryside and the threat of a violent overthrow of the government remained. Rumours circulated through the capital that a rebel force was just 25 kilometres (15 miles) outside of the capital. Deby''s government has tried to attract international attention to Chad''s problems. Its oil minister threatened on Saturday to shut down the country''s oil pipeline unless the government received oil revenues that were frozen by the World Bank. The government said it needs urgent access to the oil revenues to address priority issues, including security. Many in Chad fear the oil wealth will be misused, failing to lift the masses out of poverty while sharpening rivalries that have erupted into violence in the past. Most people think the battle for Chad, which Deby has ruled for almost 16 years, is far from over. Chad, an arid, landlocked country about three times the size of France, has been wracked by violence for most of its history, including more than 30 years of civil war since gaining independence from France in 1960 and various small-scale insurgencies since 1998.
